NETHERLANDS – Hope Porn (Records and Tapes Records)

Reviews

It’s a boring Sunday.  I’ve been parsing through my CD’s determining what I want to keep and what to sell/donate.  It’s snowing out and it’s eerily quiet which typically lends itself to a peaceful night in the Midwest.  In going through the Distorted Culture inbox, I see that the band Netherlands is up next with their new EP titled Hope Porn.  The title alone pulls me in and after hearing the first track from this band (whom I’ve never listened to before), I am completely floored and in awe.  For me, this Sunday will be unlike any other.

What transpires in the next 22 minutes or so is a mix of what Torche may sound like on acid.  Or what Dillinger Escape Plan tried to do when they went with more melodic touches in their songs.  Or better yet, what Ronnie James Dio (RIP) would sound like with Swans as his backing band and they all decided to take mushrooms.  If any of those entice you, welcome to Netherlands.

The band is made up of Timo Ellis on guitars and vocals, Ava Farber on synth bass (yes SYNTH BASS!), and Joel “Moon Boy” Willis on drums.  Timo has been a staple of the New York scene for decades has collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and Cibo Matto.  I am admittedly not familiar with Timo or Netherlands, this release will have me digging into their back catalog.  The amount of creativity, musicianship, and heaviness packed into this EP are amazing.  This isn’t metal, pop, or any other type of sub genre you’ve heard.  Netherlands are simply Netherlands and they are fan-fucking tastic.

The production on this release was mixed and mastered by Tom Tierney (A Place to Bury Strangers) at Spaceman Sound in Brooklyn, NY and feels like the band are in a room bashing this out in one take.  The sound is very pronounced and in your face.  What really sounds out are Timo’s vocals which range from high staccato to flat out screaming.  At the conclusion I can tell this is a band I’d want to see live for a the full experience.

In conclusion, I have no more words other than to click below, listen, and buy.
