I have been married to my wife for almost 10 years. It has had it’s ups and downs, but overall, things have been pretty great. Part of the reason for the success is we have each have our own lives. She likes reading; I like music. We have taken trips together and partnered in the various activities couples do, but bringing our creative forces together would most likely cause some infighting. If a couple can get together and create something as heavy, melodic, and soothing as Tidals, there’s something special in this relationship.
Spotlights are husband and wife due (Mario and Sarah Quintero) and based out of Brooklyn. What transpires from start to finish is a mix of Jesu and Smashing Pumpkins melodies blended with (at times) the heaviness of the Melvins and Torche. These songs each have an even mixture of lush harmonies and a heavy/sludge low-end element which confuses the senses. Do I sing along, slowly nod my head, or both?
The highlight of this album is the centerpiece “The Grower”. The heaviness makes way for melodies, a sweet acoustic piece, and then right back to the heaviness of the beginning, and then the outro back to the acoustic piece. These are carefully crafted songs and many bands who attempt this style of music (even the Deftones with which whom they’re touring) should take note.
Overall, this is a joy to listen to over and over. The melodies are not forced, and the balance of heavy/melody is perfect. Pick this up!
Recent news has surfaced that they have been handpicked by the Deftones to open on a short stint which will surely bring a ton of new fans (the Refused are also playing). Go check them out:
